Feel the R.O.C.K. Love

 

We love hearing about the positive impact that adult role models make in the lives of children. Read on for some feel good stories from a past participant and a current volunteer.

Raymond
 

“To believe in myself.”

This was the response from Raymond Fisher-Travis, a former participant of R.O.C.K. programs, when I asked him what was the most important lesson he learned from R.O.C.K. For every question, his answer was almost immediate, like he had been preparing for this interview his whole life, eager to finally put into words the impact R.O.C.K. has had on him.

Raymond started programs with R.O.C.K. when he was in Kindergarten, growing up in Skill Drills, camp and karate. One summer, he was selected to receive a scholarship to go to a camp in Washington where he was exposed to kids whose families lived down the street from Bill Gates, or owned an island. With R.O.C.K.’s assistance, he went on to receive a scholarship to Sacred Heart Cathedral Preparatory High School.

From Pre-Med to Youth Work
 

Brandon is a Director from Mountain Camp, an overnight adventure camp near Polluck Pines that allows R.O.C.K. to bring 50 children each summer for free. As part of a new Mountain Camp program, Mountaineer Adventure Camp (MAC), Brandon comes to El Dorado Elementary school on Fridays to hang out with a rambunctious group of 5th graders who absolutely love him. He brings MAC activities that focus on developing skills such as team work, adaptability, empathy and problem solving. Some of his favorite games are called LARPing and Crash Test. Homebrew Success

Did you join us for R.O.C.K. the Brew in April? It was a raging success filling cups, minds and hearts with R.O.C.K. love. Thanks so much to everyone who joined us, bid in our silent auction or brewed those delicious beers. For the sixth straight year, (R.O.C.K) is proud to put together a charity race team to participate in the 2016 Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon. Now, this is not a competitive team, but a team with heart as each member is committed to raising money to support R.O.C.K.’s programs.

Lil' Kid Camp: An invitation to attend a 3-night and 4-day adventure camp in the wilderness is extended to elementary school participants who have participated positively and consistently in R.O.C.K.'s school year programs.  For many, this is their first time sleeping in cabins away from home. Camp takes place in Polluck Pines from June 8-11 and volunteers are needed to attend the entire camp. Food, transportation and a cabin are provided.
